Education for a Better Future: Why We Produce in India

In brief

  • Our Quiet Books are made in Nishtha's own family workshop in New Delhi – not an anonymous factory.
  • Production is ETI-SEDEX audited: no child labor, fair pay, safe conditions.
  • Our seamstresses receive vacation, continued pay in case of illness, and maternity protection.
  • With every product sold, we cover the school fees for the children of our seamstresses in India – craftsmanship with a conscience.

"Why India?" – this is one of the questions we are most frequently asked. And because we believe that honest answers build trust, we address it openly here. Because behind this decision is not a cost calculation, but a story, a piece of family, and a genuine conviction.

How it all began

Jolly Designs is a family business – and our roots extend to New Delhi. Our founder, Nishtha, grew up there before coming to Germany. The real impetus for Jolly Designs was personal: when her son was diagnosed with a speech development disorder, the family looked for meaningful learning toys – and came across Quiet Books. What playfully helped him with language, concentration, and imagination became the idea that now accompanies thousands of families.

Why India?

The honest answer: because the factory where our books are made belongs to Nishtha's own family. Her parents founded the family business about 35 years ago in New Delhi, and Nishtha herself worked there for many years – including in management – before coming to Germany.

This is the crucial point for us: We do not outsource anonymously to an unfamiliar factory, but produce where we have known the people and the craftsmanship personally for decades. This very artistry, developed over generations, is what makes a Quiet Book possible in the first place – every seam, every small element is individually hand-stitched. This cannot simply be outsourced.

For us, this means: short distances, genuine control over quality and conditions – and a team that we know and value personally.

Fair conditions – audited and certified

For us, transparency also means being verifiable. Our production is regularly audited with the ETI-SEDEX certificate, which checks key working conditions: no child labor, fair pay, health and safety, environment, and business ethics.

Furthermore, our seamstresses are important to us – not as a cost center, but as people. They receive vacation, continued pay in case of illness, maternity protection, and paid time off for religious and community festivals. A good working atmosphere is the basis for a long, valuable collaboration for us. And of course, all our products are tested according to European safety standards (EN 71 / CE).

Education for a better future

In India, many children – especially in rural areas and disadvantaged urban neighborhoods – do not have access to good education. Public schools are free but often overcrowded and poorly equipped, with too few qualified teachers and learning materials. Private schools often offer better education but are unaffordable for many families. And girls and children from less privileged households particularly struggle. Yet education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty and enabling a real future.

This is precisely where we come in: With every Jolly Designs product sold – whether a Quiet Book or another handcrafted item – we cover the school fees for the children of our seamstresses in New Delhi.

This means: With every purchase, you directly ensure that these children receive a high-quality education – and thus new perspectives, the chance to realize their dreams, and a real path to a better future.

We are proud to not only offer our employees fair conditions but also to invest in the future of their children. Thus, a toy that promotes your child's development also contributes to strengthening entire families and their community in New Delhi. One purchase – a small cycle of good.

Transparency instead of hiding

Some brands would prefer to hide "Made in India" in small print. We do the opposite – we are proud of it. Of craftsmanship quality, of fair conditions, and of a story that is real. If you want to dive deeper, you can find more about our story and a look behind the scenes of our production.

Because in the end, we believe: You can feel a toy that is created with heart and integrity. And that is exactly what we want to put into each of our Quiet Books.
